Equine Athlete has developed Internship, Externship, and Sports Medicine Fellowship programs designed to help veterinarians grow professionally - in all aspects of your career..

Put your trust in our process, and you’ll come away with the tools, resources, and support to build the career you desire.

What is a Sports medicine Fellowship?

Open to internship graduates or practitioners with two to four+ years of experience, our fellowship program is a two year position working directly with one of the partner veterinarians within our practice.

  • This position is all-ambulatory and centered around the management of today’s equine athlete; it offers the opportunity to see a vast number of cases, rapidly gaining extensive experience in lameness diagnosis, imaging, and therapeutics. We are proud of our culture of strong mentorship from the more experienced practitioners and our sense of teamwork amongst peers and staff across all locations.

  • There is no on-call requirement with this position, with the exception of the possibility during attended horse shows.

  • One of the strengths of our program is the high level of mentorship provided, including hands-on experience. Many of our patients stay in our care for decades; the ability to closely follow these athletes, from their response to treatment to their recovery from injuries, presents a unique opportunity to gain invaluable experience with case management.

For the upcoming 2025-26 season, our Michigan and California based locations have SPORTS MEDICINE-focused fellowship positions available!

Why a fellowship program, when I can be an associate, or even start my own practice right now?

As a fellow, you have the opportunity to focus directly on your skillset.

  • You will not have the stress of building a client base and caseload on your own or meeting a threshold for commission. Instead, we offer a competitive base salary that increases with your second year.

  • This time is dedicated to you growing as a professional - not just in your veterinary medicine experience and knowledge, but the time to understand the case management process and the many aspects of client communication and development - WITHOUT additional pressure.

Our fellowship graduates come away with the experience, knowledge base, and resources that many have yet to accomplish as a traditional 3rd or 4th year practitioner.

Tell Me More!

This position is fast-paced and designed to set you up for success through exposure and experience with complex cases, case management, and client interaction.

  • Upon completion, those who move forward as an associate within our practice are set up with an established client base, their own fully outfitted vehicle (complete with their own top-of-the-line diagnostic equipment and technology), and an entire team available internally to consult and collaborate with in any capacity.

Travel is part of our success as a practice. Our involvement at training farms and horse shows provides the competitive advantage of continuity of care for these athletes throughout their careers and is what sets our team and Equine Athlete Veterinary Services apart in the performance horse industry.

  • We recognize that traveling takes a level of dedication that is not easy; however, veterinarians who have trusted the process have found that their hands-on experience, skillset, and overall knowledge base gained during this time was unparalleled to that of their peers.
